OUR STORY

To truly grasp the essence of Fathom Architecture, one must delve into the journey of its Founder and Principal, Kevin Plenge, who knew he wanted to be an architect from the age of eight. His fascination with spatial arrangements, light and nature, material technology, and the sense of wonder they provide when brought together was magnified during his technical education at Georgia Tech.

This mantra to explore "a modern understanding of what is classically beautiful" is a principle intricately woven throughout Kevin's decades-long design experience, which ultimately led him to the inception of his own firm. Being a bit of a cheeky wordsmith, Kevin landed on the name Fathom Architecture for its multifaceted meaning that reflected his ultimate desire: to hire curious adventurers with a craving to design better for clients, for communities, and for the craft itself.

But what is a "Fathom" exactly? Initially as a unit of nautical measurement, approximately six feet, spanning between a linesman’s outstretched arms; this stance evokes Leonardo Da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man. A drawing that honors principles of humanism, geometry, anatomy, and art – demonstrating that the proportions we find most pleasing are derived from the human form. This is why design at a human scale is not limited to the physical, it stretches out to the boundaries of all exploration. Lastly, the dichotomy of something being fathomable and unfathomable exists in our daily lives & ignites Kevin's insatiable yearning to explore.

Much like its name, Fathom Architecture's mission is layered with purpose. Fathom Architecture focuses on bringing quality design to an entire ecosystem that impacts human life through artistic & technological expression, specializing in both residential and commercial projects. For our clients, we seek to provide elegant design solutions to what may be perceived as complex problems, all delivered with a side of quirk and mirth. For our employees, we engender the joy and passion of architecture by engaging in fulfilling projects and life experiences. For our construction community, we foster a pattern of integrity throughout the design process & beyond.
